Keeneland Race Course Facts

Keeneland has two tracks—a dirt and a turf course. The dirt track is a mile and a sixteenth of an oval, while the turf course is a 7-furlong oval. The chutes, which are extensions of the main track, allow races to be run which otherwise would have undesirable starting locations.

Most races on the dirt course end at the finish line in front of the grandstand. Races at a mile and a sixteenth, however, start and finish at the sixteenth pole, which is a sixteenth of a mile from the finish of the other dirt races. This finish line is located in front of the clubhouse.

On grass, we want the outside posts with 6–9 holes; we can deal with 10–12, but we don’t want the 1–2–3 holes. WHY?  Keeneland has big fields and a long stretch; have time to get into good positions. We do not want to get stuck on the rail, and you go up and down small hills on the backside. The far turn is a slight incline before they turn the bend, and the inside gets the worst of it. 1 2 3 is not a good post for going two turns on grass at Keeneland.

Stay away from California shippers. has come to be regarded as the golden rule; meet after meet, the figures for the California shippers on grass keep piling up; they simply lose, and many are repeatedly bet.

Breeders Cup Juvenile Tidbits:

High class sprinters can withstand fast fractions on the front-end and still kick for home.

Breeders Cup Juvenile Keeneland Winners:

In 2015, Maria Borell, another disgraced trainer, won the first sprint race at Kee with the great horse called Runhappy. He came off pace in super fast fractions and his final time was 1:08.58 (a new track record).

In 2020, Whitmore also came out of the Phoenix at Keeneland and did his best running fom behind. Again, too fast in the beginning, resulting in a cave in with the speed horses.

What to watch for in a winner at Keeneland

  • Strong bullet work, great recent form
  • Triple Beyer figure in recent races
  • Won a grade 1 or 2 over 6 or 7 furlongs

Eliminate

  • Speed horses from outside posts (12+)
  • Less than 4 prep races
  • No race at 6 furlongs during the year

Two races were held at different lengths for the Keeneland Breeders’ Cup

  • The Filly & Mare Turf was held at 1 3/16 miles instead of the usual 1 ¼ miles
  • Turf Sprint was held at just 5 ½ furlongs instead of 6 ½ furlongs.

Tidbits from Kennedy's Corridor

Golden Oldies
  • The entrant must have finished in the money in their last start.
  • The entrant must have made a minimum of 4 starts in the current season.
  • The entrant must have won a race at 6f furlongs in the current season.
  • The entrant must have won at least one Graded Stakes race in the current season.
  • The entrants last prep race must have come on the dirt.
  • Must have earned a 100 Beyer Speed Figure minimum in their final start before the Sprint.
  • Cannot have run 10 Beyer points higher in their last start than their previous career best.
  • The entrant must have started lower than 10/1 in their last race.

Quality is often reflected on the tote board. Horses that are long odds in the preps usually have to run above themselves to convince their connections that they belong in the Breeders Cup. However regression after a career top is quite common. This is an attempt to identify horses who are susceptible to regression. Or to identify the horses that simply have no chance at all.
Use history when Handicapping. The cumulative record in the Sprint of horses eliminated by these factors are 148 starts 0 Wins.

Essential Quality-2020 he closed in a fast paced Breeders Juvenile, 45.31 half mile and came out of the grade 1 BrdrsFut at Keeneland

Both Jackie's Warrior and Greenpointcrusader in the two runnings at Kee went favorate, both came out of one-turn races, both lost. What do they have in common? They were out of the money.

  • Good mid-race move in last race
  • Top Beyer figure in last or last two
  • Increasing figures as the distance increases
