Breeders Cup Classic Tidbits:

Bob Baffert, a disgraced horse trainer, controlled both BC classics at Kee, 2015 American Pharoah and in 2020 Authentic. Both horses were three-year-old. Focus on the two horses for a moment. In 2015, American Pharoah broke the previous record and finished first overall. In 2020, Authentic triumphed resoundingly and raised the bar.

Keeneland Race Course Track Facts

Keeneland has two tracks—a dirt and a turf course. The dirt track is a mile and a sixteenth of an oval, while the turf course is a 7-furlong oval. The chutes, which are extensions of the main track, allow races to be run which otherwise would have undesirable starting locations.

Most races on the dirt course end at the finish line in front of the grandstand. Races at a mile and a sixteenth, however, start and finish at the sixteenth pole, which is a sixteenth of a mile from the finish of the other dirt races. This finish line is located in front of the clubhouse.

Two races were held at different lengths for the Keeneland Breeders’ Cup

  • The Filly & Mare Turf was held at 1 3/16 miles instead of the usual 1 ¼ miles
  • Turf Sprint was held at just 5 ½ furlongs instead of 6 ½ furlongs.

The Keeneland Breeders' Cup Classic starts at the head of the stretch and goes two turns to the finish line.
