Breeders Juvenile Tidbit

In the past years there have been four two year old Breeders' Cup winners who came into the event off a sprint and won their BC races around one turn miles. Horses who tried a juvenile race off a sprint when the BC was at a two turn track went 30-0-3-4.

Won their last prep by 2 lengths or more:

Juvenile races had both the greatest number of qualifiers for this angle and the greatest amount of success. If one isolates juveniles only you get a total record of 74-13-3-5, that's from 22 races and 258 starters. The Impact Value is extremely strong at 2.06.

The juvenile races were dominated by those 2yo's who had won at Saratoga or Del Mar. Winners combined for an incredible 62%. There was even more dominance once you factored in those who had run but not did not necessarily win at the premier summer meets.

Things to look for in a winner

  • Good mid-race move in last race
  • Beyer/BRIS top figure in last or last two
  • Increasing figures as the distance increases

Eliminate

  • Outside post at Kee
  • More than 60-day layoff

Keeneland Race Course Track Facts

Keeneland has two tracks—a dirt and a turf course. The dirt track is a mile and a sixteenth of an oval, while the turf course is a 7-furlong oval. The chutes, which are extensions of the main track, allow races to be run which otherwise would have undesirable starting locations.

Most races on the dirt course end at the finish line in front of the grandstand. Races at a mile and a sixteenth, however, start and finish at the sixteenth pole, which is a sixteenth of a mile from the finish of the other dirt races. This finish line is located in front of the clubhouse.

Two races were held at different lengths for the Keeneland Breeders’ Cup

  • The Filly & Mare Turf was held at 1 3/16 miles instead of the usual 1 ¼ miles
  • Turf Sprint was held at just 5 ½ furlongs instead of 6 ½ furlongs.
